The Brief:

The home of crazy golf, fun cocktails and all things junk had ambitious business goals which were to implement an industry-leading training programme in just 6 months.

CLASSOF68 was requested to help develop the learning and development offering available at Junkyard Golf Club, shaping both the content and the delivery of their learning pathways for each member of the Junkyard team.

How did CLASSOF68 support?

Junkyard approached our head coach, Cally Bannon-Smith, knowing of her experience with the pioneering hospitality company, Living Ventures. Where she delivered a world-class training programme – the very first of its kind. They knew she, along with their newly appointed L&D Manager, Leigh Carrol had what it would take to help hit project milestones.

This meant rolling out a two-phase training programme to approximately 300 existing employees, plus any new starters, with the ultimate aim of driving guest experience and overall team satisfaction.

Here’s what Cally & the team at Junkyard Golf Club achieved together:

  • The ongoing personal development of Junkyard’s newly appointed L&D Manager, Leigh Carrol.
  • The design and delivery of a blended learning training programme with suitable content for teams that are 18-24 years old – ensuring the format was engaging and user-friendly.
  • Built & created new modules using Junkyard’s e-learning tech, Mapal One and Evolve. Following a significant investment in Evolve, Junkyard had ambitious targets to get 8 new bespoke modules created as quickly as possible – this was achieved throughout the collaboration.
  • Developed the organisational structure and introduced new positions in order to support the new L&D strategy, introducing two specialist training roles at each of the Junkyard venues.
  • Implemented the rollout of a “two-phase” training schedule for both new and existing team members.
  • Created a bespoke Junkyard Training Club ‘Train-the-trainer’ programme.
  • Developed success criteria that drive guest experience & team satisfaction.

Whilst we’re here, it must be noted that on Cally’s first day, at approximately 9 am, she wasn’t afraid to get stuck into an emergency dog-chase through the NQ, when one of  Junkyard’s office pooches made an escape!

Notes from Junkyard:

SAM JONES, MANAGING DIRECTOR, JUNKYARD GOLF CLUB

“Cally was the perfect partner to help us build our L&D programme. Her knowledge and experience were invaluable to us, shaping both the content and delivery of our learning pathways. She made a real effort to understand our brand and her passion for hospitality as well as her relentless positivity meant it was a joy to have Cally working in our office with us.”

ANNA PIGGOTT, HR MANAGER, JUNKYARD GOLF CLUB

“Without Sixty Eight People, we couldn’t have hit our ambitious business goals to implement an industry-leading training programme in 6 months. A huge project, they supported us to create and hit project milestones rolling out a two-phase training programme to approximately 300 existing employees, plus any new starters, to drive guest experience and team satisfaction.

Cally has been a really special role model, coach and mentor for myself and other members of the people team, and as a result, has really improved both the skill and confidence of some of our senior managers.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you on this very special project, and your positivity and passion to create meaningful hospitality careers – really inspiring”.

Well done, Team Junkyard and Cally Bannon-Smith and a HUGE congratulations to Leigh Carroll for all her efforts. We can’t wait to see how this turns out!
